Stellar abundances, B. Barbuy, W. J. Maciel, J.C. Gregório-Hetem (editores), 144pp, 17x23 cm, 1996, ISBN 85-85047-07-0, IAG/USP

In March, 1996 we tried to gather in a workshop most brazilian astronomers working on abundances in cool stars, chemical evolution, as well as some spectroscopists working on population synthesis in galaxies.

We had the pleasure of the visit of Monique and François Spite at IAG, and we were able to invite Verne Smith from the University of Texas and Luca Pasquini from ESO, Chile.

The workshop was organized trying to combine their visit with the activities of the Stellar Populations and Chemical Evolution group at IAG/USP. It showed the intense activity and interaction of brazilian astronomers working in the field of stellar abundances, and a growing interest on population synthesis in galaxies.

This volume includes the invited reviews given at the workshop, as well as most of the contributed papers. We are grateful to the Fundação de Amoparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) for financial support, and to the authors for supplying the texts in time.
