EDUCATION & TRAINING

She has Bachelor degree in Physics, Master in Astronomy, and Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of São Paulo. She did a post-doctoral research at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA – University of Harvard, 1990-1992) and was a visiting scholar at the Astronomy Department of the University of California – Berkeley (1998-1999). She was awarded an associate researcher position at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy (1994-2001).  She also made short term visits to the Universities of Princeton (USA, 1997), Pisa (Italy, 2004, 2005), and the Observatories of Nice (France, 1998), Torino (1993), Arcetri ( 2001, 2004 ) and Bologna (Italy, 2007). Currently, she is a regular visiting scholar at the University of Wisconsin – Madison (USA, since 2003) and Universidad Autónoma de Mexico.Wisconsin (USA, since 2002).

PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS

She has been an Associate-Professor at the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo (IAG-USP), Brazil, since 1997. Before that, she was first Assistant-Professor (1987-1989) and then Professor (tenure, 1989-1997) at that Institution. She was the Vice-President of Culture and Extension Committee of IAG-USP (2004-2005), President of the Graduate Program of IAG-USP (2008-2009), Coordinator of the Graduate Program of the Astronomy Department of IAG-USP (2005-2010), and is presently member elected of the Interstellar Matter Division Committee of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) (2006- ). She is also a member of the Brazilian (1982-) and American Astronomical (1992-) Societies, Reviewer for the Italian Super-Computing Resource Allocation (ISCRA, 2010-), and Coordinator of the SUPER-CLUSTER SGI Altix ICE 8400 LX of the Astronomy Department of IAG-USP (FAPESP project, 2009-).

RESEARCH  INTERESTS

Her expertise is in High Energy Astrophysics and Plasma Astrophysics, with emphasis on Theoretical and Numerical Astrophysics. Her major contributions include formulating and testing numerically theories of: (a)  Astrophysical Jets and Outflows from Stars and Galaxies and their interaction with the space environment; b) star formation and supernovae feedback on the evolution of a galaxy and its environment; b) cosmic ray acceleration and propagation and gamma ray bursts origin – the more mysterious and energetic phenomena in the Universe; and c) origin of cosmic magnetic fields both in sources, like the Sun, and in turbulent diffuse media, like the interstellar medium and the intergalactic medium.

RESEARCH  PROJECTS  ORGANIZATION AND DIRECTION

She is the Coordinator of the FAPESP Thematic Project on Investigation of High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics Phenomena: Theory, Observation, and Numerical Simulations (2006-2011).
